2003 Chrysler Town and Country Whining Noise
October edited December in Chrysler. I have a Town and Country with K miles on it. Several months ago, I noticed when coming off the interstate and turning that the steering made a really loud whining noise. It would go away on it's own after driving at slower speeds for a few minutes.
I thought it was the power steering pump. Fluid level was fine. If the van was driven around town, it would make no noise, only after coming off the interstate - from highway speeds.
Now it seems to be getting worse - it makes the noise when accelerating and turning - again only after being driven at higher speeds. If you start it up and just go around town you won't hear a peep out of it. The steering is fine and other than the noise the van is perfect. My husband decided after looking at the pump that he does not want to attempt changing it himself so she's going to the dealer tomorrow - which I'm dreading.
Any ideas? The service guy over the phone said maybe just a pulley going bad? December I had the same problem 2 years ago. My mechanic replaced the fluid in the tank with something and it stopped the loud growling and whining noise until lately and the noise returned. He ordered a new tank for it The mystery of this is where would trash come from to stop up the screen in the tank? Some theories are that it might come from the hoses?

Do you. It sounds like the transmission shop missed it because the front pump is sucking in air so it could have bad seals or the filter is clogged causing the issue did they check that? Caradiodoc Was this answer.

There is seems to be a miss but Goodyear says it is the tranny. There was also a whine and they serviced the tranny and it went away. Are there prob? While I was driving. At times it would hesitate to go up hills and when coming to a light it would shake and sometimes shut off.

After getting around 50, miles I noticed a whine in the Transmission that would change pitch as it shifted through the gears the worst in 3rd.
This was a progressive noise that over the course of 18 months or so is getting louder and louder in the cabin. Bad enough that you could not talk hands free on a phone for it being to loud. I new this was going to be a bearing failure and that it was not going to heal itself and when it does break, the vehicle would come to a stop.
Being a mechanic and ASE certified. I dropped the trans, pan looking for metal. With none found I decided to take it to a Transmission specialty shop. For I don't have a lift, nor some of the specialty tools, and I also have not tore down an automatic transmission in years. I have also learned that this shop installed some new updated parts into the valve body that improve function.
This they did. Saving the old parts for my inspection. The main failed part was a large tapered roller bearing at the back of the case for the main shaft.
Gulling and Brinelling to the extent that I don't think this bearing would of lasted much longer. Also other bearings and needle bearings planetary gears are all discolored. Long story short, complete rebuild, no warranty. But they have seen it before and even on other makes. Well after i had a new transmission put onto the minivan i had the same problem a few weeks after, but then we put the old transmission back on and the same thing so what i believe that it is, i think that its the computer itself I've been told about an upgrade in the computer system that that could be it or the system needs to be reset when putting on the new transmission to have it adapted to the new instead of the old.
I have had the bearing in my transmission replace 3 times in 14 months and now a 4th time but Chrysler won,t fix it problem has occured to many times they want to replace the transmission but want me to pay dollars to do so now that my warranty has run out. Shame on Chrysler for trying to screw the customers that keep you in business. I will never ever buy Chrysler again or recommend anybody to. We have a Chrysler Town and Country Touring Van, we have had nothing but problems with this transmission.
The upper and lower trans gear bearing went out on it causing a nasty whine and hard shifting. We put another trans in it and a week later it lost two gears causing us to only be able to drive 40 and it would try to downshift causing us to have to pull over, stop the car, and try again. We are currently putting another new trans in it.
Never in my life have I had to deal with a car havingmiles on it and gone through its third trans.
